Tiyamike Ngonda graduated with a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering (with distinction) from the University of Malawi in 2001, a Master of Engineering (with distinction) from the University of the Witwatersrand in 2004 and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Cape Town in 2020. Prof Ngonda is a professional mechanical engineer registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa. He has worked as a lecturer at several universities in Southern Africa. He is an associate professor of mechanical engineering at Cape Peninsula University of Technology, South Africa. Prof Ngonda has published in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings. His research focuses on engineering education, thermodynamics, renewable energy and materials science.
