J.A. Proenza is full professor of the Department of Mineralogy, Petrology and Applied Geology at the University of Barcelona, and coordinator of the research group “Mineral Resources for the Energy Transition (MinResET – SGR-Cat2021)” (recognised as a consolidated research group by the Catalan Government). His current research program includes: i) the study of supergene enrichment processes of Co-Ni and critical metals (PGE, REE, Sc) in Ni-laterites and karst bauxites; ii) the study of mineral systems in volcanic arcs product of intra- oceanic subduction; ii) the origin of exotic mineral associations (including diamonds) in ophiolites; and iv) the petrological, geochemical and metallogenic study of oceanic ultramafic complexes, tectonically emplaced on convergent margin plates. The results of his research have been published in >130 articles in JCR journals and also presented at >200 international conferences. In addition, Prof. Proenza develops an important training activity, with standard of excellence, which involves the participation in several Official Masters: i) Mineral Resources and Geological Hazards (University of Barcelona and Autonomous University of Barcelona), ii) Geology Applied to Mineral and Energy Resources (University of Granada), and iii) Geology and Environmental Management of Mineral Resources (International University of Andalusia).

My professional career is being developed mainly in the field of calculation of structures using numerical methods.

Since November 2011 I work in the International Centre for Numerical Methods in Engineering (CIMNE) in Madrid developing research projects in Civil Engineering. The projects focus on the possibilities of using particle methods for the calculation of the behaviour of granular materials, specifically, the Particle Finite Element Method (PFEM) and the Discrete Element Method (DEM).

During my years at the CIMNE I studied the Master of Numerical Methods in Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) and my PhD thesis entitled "Numerical analysis of railway ballast behaviour using the Discrete Element Method", presented on October 6, 2017, also at the UPC. The thesis, awarded the XVI Talgo Prize for Technological Innovation, was focused on the application of the Discrete Elements Method to the calculation of the behaviour of railway ballast.
